Right Now: CrossFit Championships 2010

by Skimble

CrossFit is the grueling exercise regimen used by many police academies, special ops units, martial artists and other elite athletes. Designed to be applicable to almost any athlete, each workout consists of both cardiovascular and strength training.

The 2010 CrossFit Games, going on right now, are billed as the "ultimate test of fitness." For three days, elite athletes from around the world compete in a series of events whose exact makeup is not released until the event. Just for a taste, last year's events included:

  • 7km Hill Run
  • Deadlift one rep every 30 sec moving from 315lbs to 505lbs in 10lb increments (women went from 185lbs to 375lbs)
  • 170m Hill Sprint with two 35lb sandbags (women used a single sandbag)
  • Row 500m, pound a 4' stake into the ground, Row 500m (women used a 3' stake)
  • Couplets [3 Rounds for time of 30 Wallball / 30 75lb Squat Snatch (women used 14lb medicine ball and a 45lb barbell)]

And that was just Saturday.

CrossFit publishes a Workout of the Day online for free, designed to get anyone into fighting trim. In addition, they have a widespread network of affiliates, and are a great resource for all things fitness.

Skimble's action recap of SXSW 2010 & Microsoft BizSpark Accelerator Competition - Top 3!

by Skimble

It's been about a week since Skimble (literally) rocked SXSW 2010.  We made the most out of the Microsoft BizSpark Accelerator startup pitch competition by promoting healthy lifestyles at a conference that may, at first glance, seem far from.

Skimble placed Top 3 in the Innovative Web Technology category at SXSW Accelerator 2010 and received valuable feedback from expert judges including Guy Kawasaki, Paul Graham of Y Combinator, Marshall Kirkpatrick of ReadWriteWeb, and Chris Sacca of lowercase capital (stunned!).

Here's a recap of our SXSW adventure and what people we're saying about Skimble:

"the most memorable moment of the day goes to Maria Ly, founder of Skimble, who performed a 30-second exercise jam which included backflips, and legs pulled behind her head - while flipping open a phone. Though, we're sure that's not the only reason Skimble - a platform to track, plan and share sports and recreation activities with friends - made the cut!"

- Microsoft BizSpark Accelerator at SXSW - Day 1 Recap and Day 2 Live! @ SXSW Interactive

"The final contestant to take the stage was Skimble and if there's one thing we can say, it's that co-founder Maria Ly did it with style...This woman is living what she's preaching."

- ReadWriteWeb's Mike Melanson

Out 'n about at SXSW, Team Skimble looked their 'active' best:

We also made sure to say hi to the nice folks at PayPal's SXSW booth and demo the Skimble application:

Before SXSW Interactive ended, Tim Ferriss of The 4-Hour Workweek 'muscled up' some Skimble love:

'S' is for Skimble:

Here are some of our friends enjoying the Austin sun:

Nothing stopped us from doing some yoga at Lululemon Athletica, urban run/walking downtown and bouldering at Austin Rock Gym South in between SXSW events.
