Skimble's co-founder Maria Ly does TEDx flips for the future of health & fitness!

At Skimble, we love inspiring others to embrace a healthy and active lifestyle using some of the latest mobile tech innovations!  It's an idea we think is worth spreading. Fittingly, Skimble's co-founder Maria Ly recently gave a TEDx Talk at her alma mater, the University of Waterloo, in Canada.  Here's Maria's talk...backflips, twists 'n all:

Before hitting the stage, Maria met up with her impromptu stunt team consisting of three all-star gymnasts/dancers from the uWaterloo Cheer team.

They practiced for only a couple of hours before busting out their fit moves!  From Right to Left: Olivia Turi, Amanda Whaling, Maria and Glynnis Marie Pardo. Thanks Samson Yan for teaming us up :)

2011 mHealth Summit Photo Recap by Skimble

Once there was eHealth, then there was dHealth, now there is mHealth...and it looks like it's here to stay.  This week, Skimble was on site at the 2011 mHealth Summit (#mHS11) at the Gaylord in DC.  This year, the summit attracted over 3600 attendees from 46 states and 50 countries.  Here's our photo recap:

The conference kicked off with some incredible Keynotes and Themed Tracks:

The exhibit hall was packed with innovation including the Start Up Pavilion where Skimble was representing along with Rock Health, CellScope and other great startups.

The first evening was spent at a dueling piano bar!  There we celebrated the QualcommLife 2net device platform launch with Rock Health:

Cheers to mHealth!

The second night was spent with Health in Place's Disruptive Women in Health Care:

Halle Tecco of Rock Health speaks:

We wrapped things up in style with a little nightcap in downtown DC:

Of course we had to stop by the White House for some eggnog with the Obama's ;p

Feeling all warm inside, we checked out the National Christmas Tree:

What a trip!  Thanks everyone for making the mHealth Summit so memorable and invigorating, The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health, HIMSS, The mHealth Alliance (mHA) & The National Institutes of Health (NIH).

For those who aren't too familiar with the event, the mHealth Summit brings together leaders in government, the private sector, industry, academia, providers and not-for-profit organizations from across the mHealth ecosystem to advance collaboration in the use of wireless technology to improve health outcomes in the United States and abroad.

PS: don't forget to work off those dark chocolate truffles we provided with Skimble's top free app, Workout Trainer iPhone/iPad and Android!

Skimble gets with the Rock Health accelerator program to help you mobilize your fitness this summer!

Team Skimble is rocking out today!  We're thrilled to announce that we will be as part of the inaugural Rock Health program this summer in San Francisco.

 alt=

Our mission is to enable and empower an entrepreneurial cure for the relative lack of innovation in the health sector. The world of patient care and healthy living is foreign to the technological creativity found in social media, games and other verticals. Rock Health directly targets the gap between these ecosystems, enabling high-impact innovation. - Halle Tecco, Managing Director of Rock Health

We've been fortunate to grow organically thus far and lead with top free Healthcare & Fitness apps.  We're pysched to continue to spread our active wings with the support and encouragement of the health and fitness community at large!

Rock Health partners include Mayo Clinic, Nike, Accel Partners, NEAAberdare Ventures, Mohr DavidowHarvard Medical School, Microsoft and Qualcomm to name a few:

We'll also have access to an incredible support team along with rockstar mentors such as Linda Avey, co-founder of 23andMe, Frank Moss, MIT Media Lab director, Michael Abbott, VP of Engineering at Twitter, Ron Gutman, founder of HealthTap & Wellsphere, Dave Morin, co-founder of PathEmily Chang, co-founder of IdeacodesLee Byron, interactive information designer at Facebook, and Charles Huang, co-founder of GuitarHero.

Mother's Day: Meet the moms of Skimble's founders! Breast Cancer victim. Holistic health author. Organic entrepreneurs. Eastern medicine.

We hope you're having a great Mother's Day!  Today, Skimble's co-founders Gabe and Maria would like to give thanks for their moms by sharing their little-known yet inspiring stories:

Gabe-ari-mom

Gabe grew up in the Boston area, born to parents with holistic health backgrounds.  His mother, Johnna, was an inspiring woman and published author of Greens Glorious Greens Cookbook!  She was also a breast cancer victim who passed away during Gabe's teenage years.

Gabe-family
Resilient, Gabe continued to eat his greens along with his father, Louis, an acupuncturist who runs a holistic healing practice, American Acupuncture, in Pembroke MA and is the author of several health books.

Gabe's life has been filled with progressive thinkers of natural living with organic foods and holistic health.  Although their mother has passed, both Gabe and his sister Ari keep her close to their hearts and life's work.  Ari puts it this way:

For me personally, breast cancer has affected my whole life since I was 7 years old when my mom was diagnosed with the disease. From that day on, my life would never be the same.  I have wanted to help in the fight against breast cancer for a long time and am so happy to finally be achieving that goal with my friends and family.

On that note, Gabe and Maria will be teaming up with Ari and friends this Saturday (3:30pm & 4:45pm) to raise funds for Breast Cancer Research with a TRX class in San Francisco.  Sign up if you can join us!

Not in SF but would like to make a donation?  Please visit our Breast Cancer donation page.

Now a little about Maria's moms!  Maria's parents immigrated to Canada while she was just a baby.  They worked tirelessly to establish themselves, all while hustling Maria to/from gymnastics, figure skating, power cheer and dance lessons.

Entrepreneurial by nature, they started Sun Fatt Bean Sprout Co where her mom grew organic sprouts to restaurants and grocery chains like Sobeys and later a Tool & Mould making/finishing company, Nutek.

Maria's grandma is her 2nd mom!  She lived with their family in Canada and often shared the knowledge she gained from running eastern medicine pharmacies with Maria's great grandma back in Asia.  Growing up, Maria's life was all about being active, eating healthy and east-meets-west medicine.  After 95 lively years, grandma Ly will forever be remembered and cherished.

Thank you, moms!  You helped empower us to be the people we are today, striving to make the world a healthier and more active place with Skimble.

We hope you had a heart-warming Mother's Day with your moms!

Guest writer: Paul Gilbert, an active Skimble member with an inspiring story!

Today we'd like you to meet 52 year old Paul Gilbert, an active Skimble member with an inspiring story:

On March 16th 2010, I signed up with Skimble.  On March 16th 2011, I was still active on Skimble. I wish I could remember how I discovered Skimble, but after a year, it doesn’t matter, I found it, joined, downloaded the Skimble Sports Tracker iPod Touch app and headed out.

Media_httpasset2skimb_tawij

To give a bit of my background, at the end of December 2009 I spent a week in the hospital with a respiratory problem. It was my second stint in the hospital because of the same problem. I had to be in the Intensive Care for about a week as the medication and treatment did its work. I knew once I had been discharged I would continue to take medication and I also knew what it would be, Prednisone. If there was one drug I hated taking it was this, yet it was what I needed. If you know anything about Pred, you may know some of the multiple side effects, one of the them was weight gain. No matter how hard I tried, I was gaining weight. I could tell because my clothes, despite of my efforts to ignore, were becoming tighter. At my age it was enough of a challenge to keep the weight off at the best of times, but now I was taking medication that made it even more of a challenge.

I've always been active, running, biking and doing weights. What I never developed was a systematic plan of keeping track of what I had done.  Sure I could write it down, and I did try but it never went more than a month. That may have been one of the reasons for finding and using Skimble, not only does it make me keep track, it makes it enjoyable.  Through the accumulation of points, plus being challenged by others, it keeps me marking down my exercise sessions.  Also, looking at the charts and seeing a week I’ve missed, it stares at me like missing teeth.

Media_httpasset2skimb_fcfmi

To continue my Prednisone story; the doctor wisely kept me on a high dosage until he could feel confident I was over the worse of the condition and then start to wean me off it. By October I was finally off and I began another part of my Skimble adventure- I became a PRO (only $9.99/year). It was simple through the app store. I now could keep track offline and simply uploaded later. When I got off the Prednisone it was time to get serious with health, fitness and losing weight. I had to increase the cardio and that meant the treadmill. I had used it in the past, but just walking. To be honest I had not been a fan of the treadmill, but I knew what I needed to do, and that meant getting back to a consistent running program. Here is where the new status of Skimble helped, I could record my results right after the run and then upload later. This became very important since I needed to track my training. With Skimble I could keep track of distance, time and even speed. I noticed that I was beginning to run longer and longer and I could keep my speed up and increase it. I noticed the mileage was going up and at the same time, the scale was showing the weight was going off.

To date I’ve lost 10 pounds and am feeling great.  It’s now April and I’m still running. I can go over what I’ve done and remind myself how I’ve felt. For fun I can read the calculation of how much weight I’ve lifted over the various exercises. It’s impressive when you notice the hundreds of pounds lifted over the space of a month or even a week.I know that I am feeling better and I believe Skimble has been a part of the strategy of making me feel better.  I’ve also been able to recommend Skimble to others, for anyone who has an iPhone or ipod touch it has to be one app that must be on, since as I said at the beginning it makes tracking exercise programs very simple and gives the incentive to do better next time right back to you.  So not only does it track it motivates, all for pennies a week.  Do I plan to use Skimble for the next 12 months?  Of course!  Will I continue my pro membership?  Definitely!  Not only that, there a few people on my friend’s list I want to beat this month.

Paul, thanks for reaching out to us at Skimble and sharing your inspiring story!  Just a few follow-up questions:

What is your favorite active experience that you recommend to others?  Wow, what a question - of the different places I've been and I would say hiking through the North Shore mountains in Vancouver.  As for where I live, riding through Brant County, where some of the pics in this post come from.
What is your favorite thing about Skimble?  I like the variety of exercises I can track.  If I'm doing something, chances are I can find it.  Also the fact I can track and store off-line.  I use this when I go for a walk for my 'morning constitutional'.  It's all part of the exercise plan.  Plus I like the fact I can have graphs to track what I've done.  Oh yes, the monthly scoring, there are people on my friends list I consider to be my challengers, they might not know it, but I always check their scores as often I check mine.  If they go ahead, I know I've got to do a few more things next time at the gym, or run a little faster.
How can we improve Skimble?  I can't think of any major things to improve, perhaps add some way to track snow shovelling or grass cutting.  ;)   You being Canadian would understand what I mean.  I think I would say keep improving, nothing major but keep the evolution of Skimble going.  (we'll keep you posted!)
Anything else you'd like to share?  Thanks for making this available.  I hope Skimble continues to grow and thrive.  Thanks for giving the opportunity to write to you!
