Skimble’s Trainer Spotlight: Sarah Fisher

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Sarah Fisher

Meet Sarah Fisher, Skimble‘s featured Trainer! This mom of three is a force to be reckoned with. We recently had the chance to chat with Sarah and learn more about how she discovered the CrossFit methodology to challenge her clients both physically and mentally.

Tell us a bit about your background and where you’re from.

Sarah: I’m a 35-year-old Personal Trainer and CrossFit Trainer from Birmingham, United Kingdom. I used to be a seamstress and made a big career change to the fitness industry about four years ago.

What inspired you to become a personal trainer?

Sarah: I started exercising after having children and discovered that I had a real passion for it. My body changed and I started to achieve things I never thought I could. One day I was helping someone in the gym, trying to do a push-up for the first time. It ended with them completing their first ever proper push-up and the look on their face was priceless. It was then that I knew I wanted to become a trainer and help others on their fitness journey to achieve their goals.

What are your training specialties?

Sarah: I love training my clients using the CrossFit methodology. I believe that this method of high-intensity training yields the best results. Not only do my clients get fit and healthy, but they also get strong both physically and mentally. I specialize in Olympic Lifting and running too, which go hand-in-hand with CrossFit training and keep things varied for everyone involved.

How did you get involved in CrossFit?

Sarah: I started my training journey as a distance runner, completing many half marathons and several full marathons. I wanted to add some resistance training to my programming to combat the usual running injuries but became bored with regular gym stuff. After some online research, I discovered CrossFit. It was exactly what I’d been looking for! The variety of monostructural exercises, gymnastics and weightlifting movements combined made my training plan so varied that I never got bored. I started training with a CrossFit trainer at my local gym and soon after that entered my first competition. That was four years ago and I’ve never looked back.

How did you first hear about Workout Trainer?

Sarah: I came across Workout Trainer about five years ago when I was training for a marathon and was looking for some cross training sessions that I could do outside of running.

What’s your favorite feature in the app?

Sarah: I love the workout creation feature. The exercise database is so comprehensive and gives me new ideas that I wouldn’t have thought of previously. It also gives me the opportunity to share the workouts I’ve been doing with members of the community, which I really love.

How do you use Workout Trainer as a part of your coaching business?

Sarah: Since joining as an online trainer, I have added existing clients to my account. I now send them daily workouts and check that they have been completed. It’s great for my clients as it gives them a little extra push to get up and move outside of our in-person sessions.

In your experience, what are some of the benefits of online training?

Sarah: Online Personal Training is great for people who don’t have the time to get to the gym. As a mother of three myself, I know how difficult I found it when my children were very young. Having an online trainer takes the headache out of searching the internet for a home program and ensures that the program provided is specific to the client’s needs.

What keeps you motivated to stay fit yourself?

Sarah: I think the human body is an amazing machine! I enjoy testing and pushing it to new levels. There’s nothing better for me than seeing strength numbers go up and mile times come down. I believe that training is beneficial not only on a physical level, but it’s also great for mental health. I still want to be able to run around when I have grandchildren, so keeping fit and healthy is also very important to me for this reason.

Finally, can you share a secret health/fitness tip with the Skimble community…

Sarah: Never neglect your mobility work! It may seem boring to be stretching and foam rolling after your sweaty gym session, but in the long run, the benefits are fantastic. Keep injuries away with just ten minutes of foam rolling and stretching every day 🙂

Thanks for sharing with us, Sarah, we’re excited to see what the future will bring for you and your CrossFit career!

Skimble’s Trainer Spotlight: Hanna Aakjaer

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Hanna Aakjaer

Meet Hanna, Skimble‘s featured Trainer! Changing people’s attitude towards fitness one client at a time, this Swedish-based trainer takes fitness to a whole new level. We recently had the chance to chat with Hanna Aakjaer and learn more about how she fell upon this career path and has never looked back.

Tell us a bit about your background.

Hanna: I’m originally from Portland, Oregon, but started training when I was living in Northern California. I have a sports background that started out with gymnastics and have tried just about everything from dance to rowing since then! I have a degree in biochemistry from the University of Oregon and am currently doing my Ph.D. in Biophysics in Gothenburg, Sweden. I’m all about the scientific background behind health and fitness – I believe that having a true understanding of how and why our bodies move the way they do leads to better and faster results – so yeah, science is my jam 🙂

Since you’ve been living in Sweden, how do you stay active during the winter months?

Hanna: Great question! Luckily, where I live in Sweden it doesn’t get super cold. But with snow and ice, it certainly makes running and outdoor workouts a bit more challenging. I always do a lot more hot yoga, indoor rock climbing, and sign up for fun gym classes during those times. I love to use the winter months as an excuse to try new activities – for example, this winter I started Muay Thai. It’s such a great workout, both physically and mentally!

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Hanna Aakjaer

What inspired you to become a personal trainer?

Hanna: Gosh, how much time do you have? I think the moment that it really ‘clicked’ for me was the first time I led a fitness class. I was doing it as a volunteer for a sports group I was part of and had just put together a fun workout for us all to do together, but as the leader I took the role of motivating and making sure everyone was doing the exercises correctly. I have no words to describe the sheer joy and fulfillment I felt after finishing the class and seeing all these exhausted participants smiling ear-to-ear. So proud of what they had accomplished, and simultaneously so happy and hopped up on endorphins. Knowing that I had contributed to this incredible feeling I knew they were experiencing – I walked home that evening feeling like I had unlocked the secret to never having to work a day in my life. From then on, I’ve had that same feeling of pure joy every time I train a client or lead a class. What really drives me is helping those that don’t naturally think they enjoy fitness, to find their joy and happiness in movement – no matter what form that may take (it’s SO different for all of us!).

What’s your favorite thing about being a personal trainer?

Hanna: Watching a client achieve a goal that they initially told me they couldn’t, and seeing the incredible end results of hard work and dedication. That’s what it’s all about for me.

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Hanna Aakjaer

What are your training specialties?

Hanna: I have a specialty certification in Corrective Exercise and the Functional Movement Screen. I really love to get creative and personal with workouts so every level can enjoy fitness and get the results they are looking for. I also specialize in women’s fitness – building strength and toning workouts specifically for women.

How did you first hear about Workout Trainer?

Hanna: A client of mine here in Sweden said he had tried it and enjoyed using it, he wanted me to be a trainer in Workout Trainer so I signed up right away 🙂

What’s your favorite feature in the app?

Hanna: The free workouts and video library are so extensive! It’s really easy to find a fun workout for the day – there is just no excuse not to get in some movement each day when you have this app.

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Hanna Aakjaer

What keeps you motivated to stay fit yourself?

Hanna: The feeling that my body can do everything I need it to keeps me motivated. To me, there’s nothing better than waking up every morning with energy, a smile, and no pain in my body… Maintaining fitness & strength, daily movement, and healthy eating habits are how I make sure I feel that way every day.

What’s your favorite kind of exercise?

Hanna: Woah, no, I can’t answer that! All of it! I’ll give you my top 5: running, metabolic resistance training, Muay Thai/Thai boxing, biking, hot yoga, and hiking. Ok, that was 6….

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Hanna Aakjaer

Finally, can you share a secret health/fitness tip with the Skimble community…

Hanna: It’s not all about what you do, it’s about how consistent you are. You don’t need the absolute perfect workout to achieve your goals, just a consistent program that continuously challenges you. In my experience, a motivational buddy or coach is the #1 way to stay consistent. Like on those days when all you want to do is go home after work and plop down on the couch – having someone there to say “Hey – just move for 15 minutes first and see how you feel afterward.” – is exactly the kind of motivation you need in your life!

Thanks for sharing with us, Hanna, we’re excited to see what the future will bring for you and your fitness career!

Skimble’s Trainer Spotlight: Matt Miller

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Matt Miller

Meet Matt, Skimble‘s featured Trainer! This bodybuilder from Seattle has a passion for science and loves sharing his knowledge about health & fitness. We recently had the chance to chat with Matt Miller and learn more about his background, as well as his love for writing about this industry.

Tell us a bit about where you’re from?

Matt: I’m from Seattle, Washington. My background is diverse, I studied in college as both a business and science major, with an emphasis on biology and physiology on track to become a Medical Doctor. After school, I entered into the field of Real Estate and Development. I have always been very active in sports from childhood, playing soccer, tennis and running track. I have been working out since my early teens and got into bodybuilding after college.

What inspired you to become a personal trainer?

Matt: Simple, my passion for helping others live a more healthy active lifestyle. Also, I noticed so many people needing guidance when they tried to start a program. I would have people approach me often in the gym asking me how to get results or advise on techniques etc. I decided after training for a competition that I would really enjoy helping others on their fitness journey. When people have the proper instruction/tools and are taught how to use them, they have far more success in achieving their goals. I want to be the best fitness educator I can be!

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Matt Miller

What are your training specialties?

Matt: My training specialties are first Bodybuilding, most of my workouts are based upon Bodybuilding principals. My secondary specialties would be weight loss and general fitness. I like to learn as many training modalities as possible. I also like to incorporate, stretching, Pilates and Yoga into my practice. Having been a long distance runner I enjoy training clients for distance events like marathons too.

On your profile, you mentioned that you’re a Health & Fitness writer too. What kinds of things do you write about?

Matt: Yes, I truly enjoy researching and writing articles about fitness, my favorites are about nutrition, I guess that stems from my enjoying science. I also wrote and published an online magazine and blog about bodybuilding and fitness for several years. I really enjoyed interviewing athletes and fitness industry experts on a variety of topics.

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Matt Miller

How did you first hear about Workout Trainer?

Matt: I read an article on a technology blog about how fitness apps were going to revolutionize the way people trained and came across Workout Trainer shortly after.

How do you use the app as a part of your personal life and/or coaching business?

Matt: I’ve found that it really helps me be more creative with my workouts as it provides a large variety of content to choose from. I can design and share workouts for my clients to do anywhere, at any time based upon their needs. It helps me track both my progress and my clients.

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Matt Miller

What’s your favorite feature in the app?

Matt: That’s a difficult question, I like so many of them! I would say the 1:1 training feature, it provides me a streamlined way to keep track of my clients’ workouts and gives them the ability to ask questions without having to make an appointment. It makes my training so much more effective since the client can refer back and not be pressured by a clock.

What keeps you motivated to stay fit yourself?

Matt: I would have to say I want to stay fit to stay active, life is so much better when you have the ability to do things that you like to do and having a fit body allows us to do that.

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Matt Miller

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working out?

Matt: I really enjoy spending time with my family and I also like to spend my spare time outdoors.

Finally, can you share a secret health/fitness tip with the Skimble community…

Matt: Set reasonable goals, and remember everyone had to start somewhere!
