Meet Janet Harritt, Skimble‘s featured Trainer! Growing up as an active child, health and fitness have always been ingrained in her lifestyle. Janet believes that being healthy encompasses much more than just your physical health, which is why she focusses on helping her clients find joy in their fitness journey to stimulate their mental and emotional health too. We recently had the chance to chat with Janet and learn about her training methods as well as some of her best tips & tricks!
Tell us a bit about your background and where you’re from.
Janet: I grew up in Memphis, TN where I was a competitive swimmer and cross country runner for most of my childhood. From there, I went on to pursue college swimming. I am now married to my amazing husband, and we have two children. I am a Personal Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor, and Nutrition Specialist in South Carolina where I train clients and teach Barre, HIIT, and cycle classes.
What inspired you to become a personal trainer?
Janet: I’ve grown up around fitness through athletics, so health and fitness is something that is ingrained into my lifestyle. It is also something that has helped me deal with stress in a healthy way. I wanted to become a trainer because I believe being healthy goes far beyond fitness and nutrition, it encompasses mental and emotional health as well. My goal is to help clients not only be physically fit but emotionally fit as well. I want clients to find joy in their fitness journey, and be fulfilled in their accomplishments. When people feel good, it overflows into every aspect of their lives, and it is my passion and joy to help them get there.
What are your training specialties?
Janet:
- Helping prenatal women have a healthy pregnancy and postpartum women achieve their fitness goals after having a baby.
- Helping athletes who are looking to train for certain events (triathlon, half/full marathon, tough mudder races, etc.).
- Helping clients who are doing well in fitness, but need help/direction with nutrition and healthy eating habits.
What do you love about integrating Workout Trainer in your coaching?
Janet: I love that no matter what, you always have a great workout on hand. You can search for a specific type of workout and do it wherever you are, whether it’s in you’re living room, at the gym, or when you’re traveling.
Who are your heroes?
Janet: I am thankful for many people throughout my life, including the coaches I had growing up who supported and encouraged me, the fellow trainers who encouraged me to turn my passion into a career and helped me grow and learn as a trainer, and my family and friends who continue to support me along the way.
What keeps you motivated to stay fit yourself?
Janet: A healthy lifestyle is something that is important to me, and now that I have children, I am motivated to stay healthy for them. I also want to share health and wellness with them. I see it as a lifestyle and a way to treat our bodies with respect. If we take care of ourselves, we can take care of and help others in turn. I want to be a good mom to my kids, and for me, that means being a healthy mom!
Do you have any guilty pleasures?
Janet: Dark chocolate, coffee shop lattes, massages, and pedicures.
What are your hidden talents?
Janet: Hmm… I won a hula hoop contest in the 7th grade! For real, I’m not sure if I have any “hidden” talents, but I love to cook all sorts of food. I enjoy running, so I try to train for either a half marathon or full marathon each year.
Do you have any go-to training gear that you would recommend?
Janet: I love mini loop bands to activate glutes when you’re working your lower body. I also like to incorporate gliders into fitness routines. Gliders can be used for legs, core, and arms so they are a great way to mix up your strength training.
Please share a secret health/fitness tip with the Skimble community…
Janet: I always ask my clients what they enjoy doing. I find this question very important when it comes to programming a fitness plan for them. Finding a fitness routine that you enjoy is key to sticking with your fitness goals. For example, I love to run. It makes me happy and it helps me feel like me. If you hate running, then why force yourself to jog every day? You won’t get very far in your fitness goals, and you probably won’t stick with it very long. But if you love yoga, find a good yoga routine or a trainer who will help you train in a similar format. You will enjoy exercising a lot more and find yourself sticking with it long term. If you’re not sure what you love or hate, try out a variety of workouts or talk with a trainer who can help you, so you can find out which ones you enjoy.
Thanks for sharing with us, Janet, we’re excited to see what the future will bring for you and your training biz!
