Skimble’s Trainer Spotlight: Monike Medina

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Monike MedinaMeet Monike Medina, Skimble‘s featured Trainer! Monike has her planning down to a tee and has proven to the world that there’s no room for excuses when it comes to your own health. She is an inspiration to hardworking moms everywhere, finding motivation in her family and community. We recently had the chance to chat with Monike and learn about how she juggles her family, work, and fitness commitments so elegantly.

Tell us a bit about your background and where you’re from.

Monike: About myself! I am an only child, raised by a single mom. I spent my childhood in Rowland Heights, California and moved to Claremont just before high school. Things were really tough for us growing up and my mom had to work hard to keep our family together. To stay out of trouble, I joined the basketball team during my freshmen year at Claremont High. I soon realized that ball sports were not for me! I am only 5″0 ft. and have two left feet. In my junior year, I discovered weightlifting and fell in love with it! I found out I was expecting my daughter at the end of my senior year so I put any further career plans on hold for a while.

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Monike MedinaWhat inspired you to become a personal trainer?

Monike: Six years later, my husband was the one that inspired me to become a personal trainer. He saw how much I loved the gym and after hearing about my short-lived weightlifting career in high school he encouraged me to pursue this old passion of mine. I finally went back to school and signed up with NASM to get my CPT and FNS.

What are your training specialties?

Monike: My specialties are Fitness & Sports Nutrition and Weight Loss Transformation. I plan to pursue many other areas of training that will enable me to consistently grow as a trainer and help me coach a wide variety of people.

How do you juggle a full-time job, family, and still find time to pursue your passion to coach people?

Monike: Oh my… I do not even know really! I work as a full-time barber, I have three daughters and a son, but I still make time to work out three days a week. It’s what keeps me going! Most of my clients are on a similar schedule, so we meet on the weekend or when the kids are in school. At work, I use my down time to do some simple workouts to keep myself fit and create new plans for my clients.

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Monike MedinaHow did you first hear about Workout Trainer?

Monike: I came across Workout Trainer on Instagram. I downloaded the app and saw how many different trainers use it. I tried it out for myself and then decided to send in my credentials to become an online trainer.

What’s your favorite feature in the app?

Monike: I love how the app helps me stay on track of my own fitness routine. Every Sunday, I plan out my workouts in the calendar to make sure I stick to my schedule and don’t skip any training days. I also enjoy the ability to connect with other busy working moms who I can relate to, it makes me feel like I’m not the only one cramming this much into a day.

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Monike MedinaHow do you use Workout Trainer as a part of your coaching business?

Monike: I use the app to send new workouts to my clients. I realize how many other moms are busy like me, so it’s great to be able to share short effective workouts with them that they can complete during their downtime, wherever they are.

What keeps you motivated to stay fit yourself?

Monike: As a woman, I definitely feel the motivation to look fit. But most importantly, I try to remind myself to stay fit for my health! Since I started meal planning and working out on a regular basis again, my health has improved so much in the last few years. My motivation is mainly driven by health benefits, as I want to be here for my children and husband in the long run.

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Monike MedinaFinally, can you share a secret health/fitness tip with the Skimble community…

Monike: The best tip would have to be REST! I highly recommend to everyone that they remember to take a day for themselves on a regular basis. Stress can be the number one problem that leads to weight problems and all sorts of other issues. Whatever rest means for you, make the time to do it! You need to take care of yourself before you can take care of others.

Thanks for sharing with us, Monike, we’re excited to see what the future will bring for you and your training biz!

Skimble’s Trainer Spotlight: Katie Barberi

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Katie Barberi

Meet Katie Barberi, Skimble‘s featured Trainer! This new mama is keen to inspire everyone around her that being fit and healthy is FUN! We recently had the chance to chat with Katie and learn more about how her passion for nutrition developed and the path that led her to become a Fitness Nutrition Coach.

Tell us a bit about your background and where you’re from.

Katie: I am originally from Boulder, CO but I now live near Los Angeles, CA. I have been married to my husband for four years and we had our first child in March of 2017. It has been the most amazing thing raising a tiny human. I spend my days juggling the little guy and working as a health coach, and I wouldn’t change it for the world!

What inspired you to become a health coach?

Katie: I found out that I have Celiac Disease in September of 2010 so that was the first time that I really thought about nutrition and the foods that I put in to my body. I was forced to pay attention to everything I eat and I quickly realized I actually enjoyed learning about how food affects the body. I also met my husband, who is a professional cyclist, around the same time and started learning how nutrition and exercise are very interrelated and it was full steam ahead from there.Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Katie BarberiWhat are your areas of specialty when it comes to fitness and nutrition?

Katie: I have two major areas of expertise, sports nutrition and pre/post-natal health. They may seem like two very different areas but they are actually very similar. I deal with two types of people that require specialized diets and lifestyles that are very specific to their current situation.

Who did you certify with and why?

Katie: I have multiple certifications. I started by getting my certification in Fitness Nutrition through ISSA. From there I went on schooling through the Nutrition Therapy Institute. I also got my pre/post-natal health coaching certification through Dr. Sears Wellness Institute. I chose the last two institutes because they aligned best with my holistic views of the body and the fact that the body is a lot of working parts that all rely on each other.Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Katie BarberiHow did you first hear about Workout Trainer?

Katie: I actually just found it by searching through fitness apps on my phone. I was searching for an app that would give me more workouts that I could do at home because of the new baby and I haven’t stopped using it since.

What’s your favorite feature in the app?

Katie: Personally, I love being able to create workouts as I am doing them. I often come up with my workouts as I go and this allows me to save them and share them with my clients.Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Katie BarberiHow do you use Workout Trainer as a part of your coaching business?

Katie: I use the app to create workouts for myself and for my clients. I am not one to enjoy doing the same workout over and over again, so this allows me switch it up and keep things original.

In your experience, what are some of the benefits of online training?

Katie: I have been an online trainer for many years now and the biggest benefit is that I am able to work with anyone, anywhere. With the technology available to us these days, we don’t need to be in the same room as each other in order for me to keep my clients accountable. I can see when my clients do their workouts, whether they finished them, how hard the workout was for them, and if I need to adjust anything. It’s also really nice because I can adjust things day to day, rather than having to wait a week or two between meetings with clients.Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Katie BarberiWhat keeps you motivated to stay fit and healthy yourself?

Katie: I have always been a fairly fit person by choice, but meeting my husband made me step up my game. Being married to a professional athlete is huge motivation to stay in shape yourself. These days my son is my motivation. I want to show him that being fit and healthy is fun. Currently he loves watching me work out and he finds push-ups hilarious, unlike myself 🙂

Finally, can you share a secret health/fitness tip with the Skimble community…

Katie: When you make goals for yourself don’t make goals that are too broad. Rather than just saying “I want to lose 15 pounds”, try to make goals that will allow you to take steps towards reaching that goal. Start with goals like, “I am going to go to the gym 3 times a week” or “I am going to track my food every day for a month”. Creating stepping stones will make it more likely that you will achieve your goals and create habits that you will stick with once you have reached that goal.

Thanks for sharing with us, Katie, we’re excited to see what the future will bring for you and your fit fam!

Skimble’s Trainer Spotlight: Matt Miller

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Matt Miller

Meet Matt, Skimble‘s featured Trainer! This bodybuilder from Seattle has a passion for science and loves sharing his knowledge about health & fitness. We recently had the chance to chat with Matt Miller and learn more about his background, as well as his love for writing about this industry.

Tell us a bit about where you’re from?

Matt: I’m from Seattle, Washington. My background is diverse, I studied in college as both a business and science major, with an emphasis on biology and physiology on track to become a Medical Doctor. After school, I entered into the field of Real Estate and Development. I have always been very active in sports from childhood, playing soccer, tennis and running track. I have been working out since my early teens and got into bodybuilding after college.

What inspired you to become a personal trainer?

Matt: Simple, my passion for helping others live a more healthy active lifestyle. Also, I noticed so many people needing guidance when they tried to start a program. I would have people approach me often in the gym asking me how to get results or advise on techniques etc. I decided after training for a competition that I would really enjoy helping others on their fitness journey. When people have the proper instruction/tools and are taught how to use them, they have far more success in achieving their goals. I want to be the best fitness educator I can be!

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Matt Miller

What are your training specialties?

Matt: My training specialties are first Bodybuilding, most of my workouts are based upon Bodybuilding principals. My secondary specialties would be weight loss and general fitness. I like to learn as many training modalities as possible. I also like to incorporate, stretching, Pilates and Yoga into my practice. Having been a long distance runner I enjoy training clients for distance events like marathons too.

On your profile, you mentioned that you’re a Health & Fitness writer too. What kinds of things do you write about?

Matt: Yes, I truly enjoy researching and writing articles about fitness, my favorites are about nutrition, I guess that stems from my enjoying science. I also wrote and published an online magazine and blog about bodybuilding and fitness for several years. I really enjoyed interviewing athletes and fitness industry experts on a variety of topics.

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Matt Miller

How did you first hear about Workout Trainer?

Matt: I read an article on a technology blog about how fitness apps were going to revolutionize the way people trained and came across Workout Trainer shortly after.

How do you use the app as a part of your personal life and/or coaching business?

Matt: I’ve found that it really helps me be more creative with my workouts as it provides a large variety of content to choose from. I can design and share workouts for my clients to do anywhere, at any time based upon their needs. It helps me track both my progress and my clients.

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Matt Miller

What’s your favorite feature in the app?

Matt: That’s a difficult question, I like so many of them! I would say the 1:1 training feature, it provides me a streamlined way to keep track of my clients’ workouts and gives them the ability to ask questions without having to make an appointment. It makes my training so much more effective since the client can refer back and not be pressured by a clock.

What keeps you motivated to stay fit yourself?

Matt: I would have to say I want to stay fit to stay active, life is so much better when you have the ability to do things that you like to do and having a fit body allows us to do that.

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Matt Miller

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working out?

Matt: I really enjoy spending time with my family and I also like to spend my spare time outdoors.

Finally, can you share a secret health/fitness tip with the Skimble community…

Matt: Set reasonable goals, and remember everyone had to start somewhere!

Skimble's Workout Trainer: Trainer Spotlight: Tina Filippi

Meet Tina, Workout Trainer‘s latest featured Verified Trainer! This busy bee decided to combine her background in medicine, fitness, and business to do something she’s truly passionate about. A few years ago, Tina Filippi started her own brand called Team Fearless Fitness to offer online personal training that thrives on helping clients reach their health and fitness goals.

We recently had the chance to chat with Tina about her business in the bay area and how Skimble makes her life, as well as her clients’ lives easier every day.

Q 1. Tell us a bit about your background and how you initially got involved in fitness?

Tina: In 2011, I started my own fitness journey. I needed to loose the 20 lbs I gained since high school, but I didn’t know much about fitness nor weight loss training since I only ever participated in team sports and dance in school. This is when I first discovered Beachbody programs and their amazing motivational coaches. They really helped me get back on track, and I knew I wanted to pay it forward.

Skimble's Workout Trainer: Trainer Spotlight: Tina

Q 2. What is your favorite workout style?

Tina: I love all forms of working out, from running to CrossFit to yoga. I like doing short, effective training sessions myself. Get in, work hard and get back to living life!

Q 3. How does Workout Trainer help you as a fitness professional?

Tina: This app helps me share and motivate others so they can be inspired to live a healthy and fit lifestyle. I’m able to reach more people virtually and make a bigger impact on the world this way.

Q 4. What is your favorite feature in the app?

Tina: I love the ability to build your own workouts as well as boost morale with pictures! It goes a long way with clients in customizing their experience.

Skimble's Workout Trainer: Trainer Spotlight: Tina

Q 5. What keeps you motivated to stay fit yourself?

Tina: My clients keep me motivated! Seeing them healthy, happy and hitting goals keeps me on my toes and motivated to continue becoming a better coach.

Q 6. Share a secret fitness/health tip!

Tina: Personal development is the key to success! You can eat clean, train every day, but if your mind isn’t in it, you’re bound to go back to unhealthy habits or give up easily when things get tough. I always tell my clients it’s a process. In order to see results, having a positive mindset is key.

Thanks for sharing with us, Tina! We’re looking forward to trying out the next workouts you create.

Skimble's Workout Trainer: Verified Trainer Spotlight: Micah Greer

Meet Micah, Workout Trainer‘s latest featured Verified Trainer! He’s collaborated with the Skimble Team from the very beginning, so you may have noticed him in some Skimble workout photos and videos. Micah Greer lives in Austin, Texas and has a Masters in Physical Education with a concentration in Exercise Physiology. He’s been a professional fitness coach since 2006 with Personal Trainer qualifications from ACE and NASM, as well, he is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist® through the NSCA.

We recently had the chance to chat with Micah about his 10-year fitness career and his experiences with the Skimble Team so far.

Skimble's Workout Trainer: Verified Trainer Spotlight: Micah Greer

Q 1. What is your favorite workout style?

Micah: I do all types of workouts, but my favorites are always set outdoors in nature. Trail running and mountain biking have been a couple of my staples for several years.

Q 2. You just got married — congrats! How did you train for your big day?

Micah: Yes! Thank you. I got married on March 4, 2016. Training was pretty similar to the norm. I usually do 2-3 days of weights, 1-2 days of a higher intensity weight/cardio mix, and another 2 days of trail running and/or mountain biking.

Q 3. What is your fondest memory from a multimedia shoot with Skimble?

Micah: Honestly, all of the shoots have been great! Some of the highlights are: breaking out the superhero costumes, seeing a Skimble push-up performed in person, and just being back in San Francisco after being away for a while.

Skimble's Workout Trainer: Verified Trainer Spotlight: Micah Greer

Q 4. What is a funny fitness moment you’ve had when training a client?

Micah: I’m going to tell you the first thing that popped in my head! This is a bit embarrassing, as well as funny. We laugh about it now so it’s worth sharing. A few weeks into training an older client, I had him finishing one of his harder workouts on the rower. This guy really liked to push himself! He was huffing and puffing, and almost done with his workout. As I was cheering him on, he exhaled forcefully and POP, out came his dentures. We were both in shock for a hot second. I didn’t really know how to deal with the situation. I felt so bad that I almost picked them up for him, but decided he should probably get them. Luckily he was a great sport and laughed it off.

Q 5. LOL, indeed! What keeps you personally motivated to stay fit?

Micah: My hunger for health, my wellness-focused career, other people, my wife, my dog, my love for the outdoors… You can find many motivations in your life, it’s only a matter of seeing them. Just pick one!

Q 6. To end it off, what is a ‘secret’ fitness tip you want to share?
 h
Micah’s fitness tip:  I love to emphasize isolated glute activation exercises, such as floor bridges and single leg floor bridges. This works especially well with newer clients, as it rids a lot of people of back pain and problems (if performed properly). It can also lead to bigger gains in weightlifting, and usually a bit more muscle on the backside.
h
Thanks for sharing with us, Micah. See you next time, with or without your fancy fohawk!
