Skimble’s Trainer Spotlight: Mario Miller

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Mario MillerMeet Mario, Skimble‘s featured Trainer! With a degree in Physical Education and 23 years of training experience, this Atlanta-based fitness coach may have mastered every trick in the book. We recently had the chance to chat with Mario Miller and learn more about how he keeps himself and his clients motivated to achieve the fitness goals they set for themselves… here’s a hint:

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Mario Miller

Tell us a bit about your background and where you’re from?

Mario: I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio and have been playing sports since I was 5 years old. As a junior athlete I knew this was what I wanted to focus on when I grew up, so I got my degree in Physical Education and never looked back.

What inspired you to become a personal trainer?

Mario: I wanted to stay in sports and coach people to become better athletes, like my coaches had done for me. And since I love working out, I believe fitness training is another avenue that allows me to inspire and coach people to live a healthy lifestyle.

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Mario Miller

What are your training specialties?

Mario: As an athlete, I participated in many sports on a competitive level. So I like to incorporate athletic training with the normal/foundational fitness workouts I create for my clients. From my experience, it has proven to be a great way to get quicker results for non-athletes too.

Your profile says you’re an Ironman, did you compete in one of the Ironman triathlons?

Mario: Yes, I competed in the Augusta, GA Ironman. I raised money for Leukemia doing it! I used to watch the Ironman Championship every year when I was younger, so I’ve always wanted to do one myself. Now that I have, I’ve set myself a new goal. I plan to do the Ironman Championship in Kona by the age of 50. Plus, a little golf on the side!

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Mario Miller

How did you first hear about Workout Trainer?

Mario: A while back, I was looking for new exercises and workouts online, that’s when I first came across Workout Trainer. The platform had exactly what I was looking for, it was simple to navigate and it had pics of exercises for supported guidance.

How do you use Workout Trainer as a part of your personal life or coaching business?

Mario: I use Skimble workouts, as well as the ones I’ve created myself. I like to use a variety of both for my own training and to share with my clients, especially when we are not training together in-person.

What’s your favorite feature in the app?

Mario: Easy! The ability to create workouts and add your own personal touch.

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Mario Miller

What keeps you motivated to stay fit yourself?

Mario: It’s my life and my job to keep myself in the best possible shape. Fitness is what I’ve known since I was 5 years old, and it’s stuck with me during my 45 years of age. Plus, I see myself as an advocate for what I do and a product of my workouts. It’s important to represent a role model of what you preach!

Finally, can you share a secret health/fitness tip with the Skimble community…

Mario: Stay in your lane! The personal goals you have set for yourself, are just that, YOUR goals, not someone else’s. So don’t try to keep up or compete with anyone else’s goals or body shape. Your body is UNIQUE, no one else has it, embrace it, love it and care for it. (That’s Free! 😎)

Thanks for sharing with us, Mario, we’re excited to see what the future will bring for you and your training biz! Good luck with your Ironman in Kona.

Skimble’s Trainer Spotlight: Marsha Clark

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Marsha ClarkMeet Marsha, Skimble‘s featured Trainer! This Atlanta rockstar is the ultimate multitasker, finding time for work, study, her children, and husband. We recently had the chance to chat with Marsha Clark and learn more about how she keeps herself and her clients motivated to live a healthy, active lifestyle on a busy schedule.

Where are you from and what motivates you?

Marsha: I’m currently located outside of Atlanta and have been a certified trainer for nearly 4 years now.  I absolutely love what I do and love the changes that I help my clients make; especially when they have lost hope and have given up. It’s very rewarding to see somebody realize their potential again. I like to think that I don’t only train the body, but the mind as well.

What inspired you to become a personal trainer?

Marsha: Fitness has always been a part of my background. I played tennis as a child and was a cheerleader in high school.  Not only that, but I was quite the tomboy growing up. I never saw any issue with girls playing ‘boys’ sports, so I used to get involved in everything I could. I was a very active kid!

What made you decide to certify with ISSA?

Marsha: When I was deciding which certification course to take I did a lot of research and compared all the major certs out there for personal fitness trainers. ISSA seemed to be the perfect fit for me! I was able to work, take care of my home, and study while I was completing the course requirements. I needed the flexibility to go at my own pace and ISSA had a structure that appealed to me. The teachers were also very informative; willing and able to answer any questions I had.

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Marsha Clark

What are your training specialties?

Marsha: Being relatable! I make the whole experience personal, from start to finish. I cater to my clients and mold them into what they set out to become, as well as what I know they are capable of becoming. I help them plan their meals, as I’m also certified in nutritional planning. I offer group fitness training, fitness parties, strength training sessions and HIIT styled workouts.

We came across Belly Dance Cardio Fitness on your profile, we’re intrigued! Can you tell us a little more about it?

Marsha: Belly dancing is something that I add as a little perk for myself, as well as my clients. It’s fun, innovative, and the hip moves and chest circles really engage the muscles of the core and calves. My favorite is the Camel Walk…lol.

How did you first hear about Workout Trainer?

Marsha: I was googling some workout apps that could help me learn more (before I really got into training myself). As time passed, I eventually created a trainer profile and became hooked.

How do you use Workout Trainer as a part of your coaching business?

Marsha: I use it for my clients. I lay out workouts for them in full detail in the app. This is for those that can’t meet me in the gym and want my expertise on what moves or machines that I think they should consider using in their training. I also use it for those with limited space and time, I crank out some ideas that I know they can handle properly with the means they have available to them at the time.

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Marsha Clark

What’s your favorite feature in the app?

Marsha: Easy! Creating workouts and sharing them with the community. People seem to love what I create and I love that I can help. It just makes me want to do and be more, it’s quite an addictive feeling to be honest.

What keeps you motivated to stay fit yourself?

Marsha: I have four kids and a husband. Motivation enough, lol. But no, seriously! I just love being fit and seeing others become motivated by my determination. I also plan to make my debut in the bodybuilding world as a bikini competitor in 2017… Wish me Luck!

Oh wow, that’s great! Finally, can you share a secret health/fitness tip with the Skimble community…

Marsha: Eat healthily! I hate hearing people say they only eat 2 or maybe 3 small meals a day. And chewing gum is NOT a meal! It’s important to give your body the fuel it needs so that ALL vital organs can perform their jobs effectively. Getting plenty of sleep is another important tip. And last but not least, have fun and smile 🙂

Skimble’s Trainer Spotlight: Patrick Morrisey

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Patrick MorriseyMeet Patrick, Skimble‘s featured Trainer! Growing up in small towns around Buffalo, New York, Patrick was a bit of a misfit. Learn how he transitioned from a career in music to finding his passion for exercise. We recently had the chance to chat with Patrick Morrisey and learn more about what keeps him motivated to stay fit with the little time he has on his hands.

Tell us a bit about your background and where you’re from.

Patrick: I wasn’t really into sports growing up, I enjoyed reading more than most other activities. I stayed relatively active, though. I got involved in various less “typical” kinds of activities, like martial arts and yoga. Activities in which the person you are really competing with is yourself. Much later on, towards the end of university, I got really into dance music. I graduated with an art degree, but never really used it professionally. Instead, I transitioned to music and became a DJ. For years, I would go out dancing multiple times a week. I loved dancing, and still do. It’s so… cathartic. But besides the dancing, there was a whole party culture that I got far too wrapped up in. After one too many years of imbalanced living, I quit partying. Dancing and music would always be special to me, but I had to somehow change the path I found myself on. I started focusing on living a better life. My experiences from that time, facing my most self-destructive tendencies and habits and turning things around into living a healthy lifestyle, have really shaped my approach to life and fitness. Years later I met a wonderful woman and her two daughters, and ended up joining their family! With the recent addition of our baby son, I’ve got quite a family now!

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Patrick MorriseyYour bio says you did a lot of traveling and teaching in the past. Can you tell us more about that?

Patrick: Yeah, sure. I moved around a little in the US after university, including Washington D.C., Montana, to work a few different jobs. But my biggest move was to Korea, to teach English. I had been at my job for about 8 years then, working with mentally disabled adults. Although it was rewarding, it was time for a change. So I went to Korea with two of my brothers. The first 9 months or so were rough. I was teaching teenagers English, and I was not prepared for that task. I eventually had a kind of epiphany about how to approach the job and the students. So between that and having years of experience being the center of attention as a performer, I managed to make it work and eventually it became a great experience that I stuck with for years. Teaching kindergarten was my favorite, it changed my perspective on a lot of things. It’s a really healthy thing, psychologically, to be the superhero for a group of cute little kids and see them grow.

Was teaching English what inspired you to become a fitness trainer?

Patrick: Yes, in Korea I had grown more and more involved with pursuing my own fitness. I would read articles, watch videos, and explore what worked for me, both physically and mentally. I had a bit of spare time and living in a foreign country, for me, was rather isolating. I had time to myself, and geeking out on workouts and nutrition and all that gave me something healthy to focus on. I found myself logging into the Skimble forums multiple times a day, helping people with questions they had and researching the questions I didn’t already know the answer to. When it came time to move back to the States, family and friends would ask me if I was going to continue teaching. I wasn’t really into that idea… I thought my personal interest in fitness and my experience and interest in teaching, would blend perfectly in personal training.

What made you decide to certify with NASM?

Patrick: Since I was self-taught up to that point, and hadn’t studied any of this stuff formally yet, I needed a cert that offered well-rounded, informative training; something that required me to study a lot. After just a little bit of research into what was available, the cost, and what was more and less respected in the fitness industry, I went with NASM.

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Patrick MorriseyWhat are your training specialties?

Patrick: My experience has mostly been with weight training and weight loss. I got really into functional training not long ago, so I incorporate a lot of that into my sessions now. l like balance and core training, as I see just how crucial they are as a foundation for everything from general healthy mobility, to superior strength and power. I’ve recently started as a senior group fitness instructor for a class at the fitness center I work at, and that’s a really positive experience in many ways. I think my overall passion lies with getting the average out-of-shape person into exercise and fitness. Because of my experiences facing myself as my own worst enemy, I developed a strong sense of empathy for people who struggle with their own self-sabotaging tendencies. I’m really into exploring my personal motivations and mental tricks I have to develop to stay focused, and I’m fascinated by how people can convince themselves something is possible or impossible. I’m especially excited by the chance to help people explore what mental approach works best for them, personally.

How do you use Workout Trainer as part of your training routine?

Patrick: My use of Workout Trainer has certainly evolved over time. At first, I just found a few short pre-made workouts I liked. The forums were really active and kept me logging in to check on discussions and new posts. Eventually, I got more into developing my own programming, and I still like to create and log my workouts on it. Besides from remembering the sequence of exercises, it’s extremely helpful with the pacing of my workouts. Rest time is really important but it’s so easy to let it start getting too long.

What’s your favorite feature in the app?

Patrick: The forums, definitely. I really like helping people out, and it motivates me to keep learning. It’s a really great feature to include that could have easily been overlooked in the creation of a fitness app.

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Patrick MorriseyWhat keeps you motivated to stay fit yourself?

Patrick: So many different things! Nowadays a lot of it is habitual. I mean, if I had to choose any one thing, it’s the regular dose of endorphins and the great feeling exercise gives me. I get really squirrelly when I don’t exercise. Being a professional is another big part of my motivation. I get to think of it like setting aside this time to work out is part of my job, so I HAVE to do this really great thing for myself. Also, I really like to eat delicious food. Chicken wings, (I live in Buffalo, home of the Buffalo wing!), Italian sausage, pizza, burgers, you know… I have a bit of a sweet tooth too, ice cream, donuts, you name it. I don’t eat this stuff all the time, of course, and some weeks are better than others. But a steady habit of working out makes it way easier to decide that I can afford to indulge every now and then.

Finally, can you share a secret health/fitness tip with the Skimble community…

Patrick: You’re not special, you’re not a mutant, you’re not one of the X-men. Your body exists in reality and must obey the laws of physics. That may sound negative, but it’s quite liberating to realize that there is no special reason you can’t lose or gain weight, or get stronger, faster, and better. Anyone can do it, that means you can too!

Oh, and start small!

Thanks for sharing with us, Patrick, we’re excited to see what the future brings for you and your coaching business!

Skimble’s Trainer Spotlight: Sam Ward

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Sam Ward

Meet Sam, Skimble‘s first international featured Trainer! Growing up in England, Sam’s been a passionate sports captain and coach for as long as he can remember. Redirecting his love for coaching towards the fitness world has served this chap well. We’ve been excited to witness the growth of Everyday Fitness, as he inspires hundreds of people around the globe to reach their goals every day. We recently had the chance to chat with Sam Ward and learn more about what keeps him motivated to Aim. Act. Achieve!

Tell us a bit about your background.

Sam: Before I start I want to say that I’m honored to be your first international feature! I grew up in a small town near Birmingham, England (not Alabama.🙂.). I’m not sure where it all began really… but I’ve always been coaching someone or some team, it’s come naturally to me ever since I can remember.

What do you like so much about coaching other people?

Sam: I always enjoyed my own training growing up, from when I was a young teenager to an athlete. Knowing that progress is the result of hard work, commitment, and determination, I wanted to deflect all the motivation I had onto others and help them progress as well. When I was the coach of my basketball team, it felt amazing to have a sense of responsibility towards my team’s progress. If some sessions weren’t good, I would still go home feeling happy because I knew I had learned where to improve next time. It’s always about self-reflection when you train someone, not criticism towards your fellow teammates or clients.

What inspired you to make the shift towards personal training?

Sam: Because of my own training I’ve always had a keen interest in gyms, so I decided to apply what I had learned whilst coaching and take on fitness training to see if it was something for me. When I stopped coaching I wanted to develop into personal training so I could have a more direct role in my clients’ progress. I enjoy pushing people to their limits and beyond. If they want 50, I’ll get them to 100!

That’s great! How did you get this strong drive to motivate people?

Sam: When I used to coach sports, I had beginner level players mixed in with experienced players and that, quite frequently, made the inexperienced members feel a little less motivated. I told them that the more experienced players on the team were once at their level too. Hard work and determination got them to the level they were at now – work hard and they can become even better! Seeing the motivation bursting out of them and all the progress they made in the coming years just made me feel great! Since then, I’ve wanted to help as many people as I can to be the very best version of themselves!

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Sam Ward

How did you first hear about Workout Trainer?

Sam: Like most of us, I have a busy lifestyle and work schedule, so I needed to find a fitness app that could help me personalize my routines and reduce organizing time. Something compact and thorough, yet simple to use. It was the first and only fitness app I downloaded and I haven’t used any other app since.

How do you use Workout Trainer in your personal life?

Sam: When I first downloaded the app, I solely used it for workouts. When the app started growing and more features were being added, I began uploading a lot of motivational posts. The community was always in support of this and that’s when I really started to see the potential. Someone you’ve not met, never seen, or even heard of before, may say you motivated them to strive a little longer. It’s a fantastic feeling! If my profile even motivates just one person, I am happy. As that one person could be motivating 1 million more!

What led you to start using Workout Trainer in your training business?

Sam: The launch of the 1:1 Training feature is what made me consider the app for my coaching business. In the past, and a lot of trainers will understand this, scheduling conflicts would be a continuous uphill struggle. The 1:1 Training feature allows me to message my clients, send a workout and check on their progress all in just a minute’s time! It’s efficient, effective and very simple to use!

What keeps you motivated to stay fit yourself?

Sam: First and foremost, my passion to stay true to my craft. I once wavered off for a while and was not committing to what I was selling to my clients. Being a good coach is all about setting the right example and being on the journey together, whatever the end goal may be. Another thing that keeps me going is the thought of being better than I was the day before. I always keep in mind that I myself was once like every past, present and future client. I was not always physically fit and I made excuses. Now it’s all about moving forward, progressing and staying the course. Also, I just love the pursuit of it all. The hard work, the sweat and oh god the sweat!

Finally, can you share a secret health/fitness tip with the Skimble community…

Sam: For me it’s 80% kitchen, 20% gym. To be able to use your body to its full potential, your fuel needs to be clean. Have you ever tried running a diesel engine on unleaded fuel? Make sure your diet is complimenting your training. You don’t need all that pasta and rice if you are only wanting to tone and lose weight. So plan your meals accordingly and you’ll start seeing results much faster.

Thanks for sharing with us, Sam, we’re excited to see what the future brings for you and Everyday Fitness!

Sam Ward is hosting a Q&A-style webinar with Everyday Fitness tomorrow October 20th, 2016 from 8am to 10pm (UTC+1). We know you all have plenty of questions up your sleeve, so don’t be shy and fire away.

Skimble’s Trainer Spotlight: Michael Lansdowne

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Michael Lansdowne

Meet Michael, Skimble‘s latest featured Trainer! This fit papa from Virginia calls himself a BIG KID at heart, but he’s a pretty bad ass trainer too. He started his own training business back in 2011, based on a vision to empower, motivate and impact his community. We recently had the chance to chat with Michael Lansdowne and learn more about what makes him the awesome husband, father, teacher and trainer he is.

Tell us a bit about your background.

Michael: Where to start… Let’s see, I’ve been training for about 12 years now. I was an All-American Sprinter in college and that’s where I met my beautiful wife. Today, I’m an elementary school teacher. I’m a BIG KID at heart and love interacting and having fun with children. I believe that life should be lived to the fullest because every moment is so precious. Oh, and I love crazy socksx🙂 In fact, I have an entire drawer of crazy socks and outfits to match. My students and clients love it! For me, it’s just another way of having fun.

What inspired you to become an elementary school teacher?

Michael: I wanted to put myself in a position where I could really make a difference in the lives of children on a regular basis. Being around children makes every day different, which is what I love about the job. You can’t treat each child the same, so it’s really fun trying to get to know them as little individuals. I believe that our children need to see more role models set a good example for them, that’s my drive to be the best I can be.

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Michael Lansdowne

How did you get involved in personal training?

Michael: Former Redskin Eddie Mason took me under his wing after college and really put his heart and soul into me. I learned so much about training and being “present” with the client, not just being there to do my job. Personal training is yet another avenue I can use to help people be the best version of themselves.

What is the Driven Leadership Academy?

Michael: I started the Driven Leadership Academy with a vision of being so much more than just another personal training business. We focus on empowering and impacting motivated people, young and old, to be the best they can be in all aspects of their lives (mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually). When clients come to me, I want them to feel like family.

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Michael Lansdowne

How did you first hear about Workout Trainer?

Michael: I stumbled across Workout Trainer when I was looking for an easier way to create workouts for my clients when I wasn’t around. I tested it out on myself and loved it!

How do you use Workout Trainer in your personal life and coaching business?

Michael: I usually journal my personal workouts (I’m old school like that…) but I’ll post some of my favorites in the app to share with the community. I love finding new ways to challenge my clients as well as myself. Don’t laugh, but I create most of my workouts during my boys’ bath time in the evening.

Lol, we couldn’t resist! Once you get your creative juices flowing, how do you share your workouts and ideas?

Michael: Besides from sharing my favorite workouts in the app, I love the ability to reach out to others through motivational posts and pictures to share my ideas and inspire others. It really makes the app come to life in my opinion.

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Michael Lansdowne

What keeps you motivated to stay fit yourself?

Michael: My wife and my two little ninjas (3 years & 1 year). They are counting on me to lead by example and that’s what I strive to do every day. My boys need to see their dad exercising, making time for them, and also showing them daily how to treat their mom and others with love and respect.

Sounds like a winning plan! Finally, can you share a secret health/fitness tip with the Skimble community…

Michael: Fitness isn’t complicated, it’s actually rather simple. You have to figure out what your “WHY” is and use that to motivate you each and every day. Training isn’t a 21-day process, it’s a life long journey. We learn and we grow every day. We will fail, we will fall off the wagon, but learning from our mistakes to become better versions of who we were yesterday is the most important part of the journey.

Skimble’s Trainer Spotlight: Jessie Swaner

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Jessie SwanerMeet Jessie, Skimble‘s latest featured Trainer! This Oregonian turned her passion for rowing into a career when she started her own traveling gym. We recently had the chance to catch up with Jessie Swaner and learn more about what motivates her to give back to her clients and the local community.

Tell us a bit about your background and where you’re from.

Jessie: I could swim before I could walk. I have two very athletic parents and it was really important for them to raise kids who played sports. I played soccer, swam, and was into horseback riding when I was younger. I swam competitively up until college and then switched to rowing. When I started rowing, I instantly fell in love with it. I always loved swimming, but not the way I love rowing.

Jessie: It was my love for sports that led me to become a personal trainer. I was in my early 20’s when I decided I wanted to get certified as a personal trainer to help people. I also have my Bachelors degree in Community Health Education, so as you can see health has always been really important to me. My background in Community Health Education gave me the skills and tools I needed to help communities become healthier and happier.

What is Rowology and how did it all begin?

Jessie: It was my love for rowing that inspired Rowology. Rowology is the personal training business I started in Oregon. I focus most of my training around the rowing machine because I love it, and because most people don’t know what a great workout rowing can be. Rowing uses the whole body and builds muscles. I hope to open a gym that focuses on group training around the rowing machine; an interval style class where athletes can row, lift weights, then row again. That’s the dream!

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Jessie SwanerHow did you first hear about Workout Trainer?

Jessie: I first came upon Workout Trainer when I was researching workout apps. There are so many different types of workout apps out there, but there aren’t many with a comprehensive platform like Workout Trainer. It has the community, the workouts, and professional knowledge that both athletes and fitness enthusiasts need.

How do you use Workout Trainer as a part of your personal life and/or coaching business?

Jessie: Even though I’m a personal trainer, 98% of the time I use Workout Trainer when I’m at the gym working out myself. There are so many different workouts that it makes my weekly fitness planning easier. And I have the luxury of adding my own personal ones too, which is great because other users get to see what myself or other personal trainers are doing, and even try some of my workouts.

Workout Trainer by Skimble: Trainer Spotlight: Jessie SwanerWhat helps you stay motivated to train?

Jessie: Music is what keeps me motivated to stay fit. I love listening to music! There are different genres I listen to for different types of workouts I’m doing. I usually listen to classical music when I’m doing yoga, rap when I’m lifting weights, and dance music when I’m rowing.

Share a secret health/fitness tip with the Skimble community…

Jessie: I know this isn’t a secret, but a lot of people don’t realize the importance of doing push-pull style workouts. Whether you are focusing on back or arms, it’s important that you do a push exercise with a pull, or focus on just pull or push for the day. 1) It really helps you focus on a workout routine 2) It allows the body to recover, and burn fat. It’s crucial to let the body recover, and who doesn’t want to burn more fat?!
